Direct File Editing (OpenIn)

Overview

The direct file editing (OpenIn) feature allows you to edit your standalone files directly from Samepage and have Samepage manage the versioning and the synchronization of the edits back to the cloud and back to Samepage. This ensures that all users are always working from the latest version of the file.

Standalone files are the traditional versions of Word, Excel, etc that are not cloud based.

The direct file editing (OpenIn) feature supports only Microsoft and PDF files.

The direct file editing (OpenIn) feature only works in the Samepage desktop app.

How it works

Direct file editing (OpenIn) works with File Documents and files uploaded to a Page Document.

Clicking on the file will open it in preview mode. Preview mode is an image of the content of the file. In preview clicking on the “Open” or “Open in…” will begin the direct file editing (OpenIn).

The system will download that version of the file to a temporary folder on your machine and launch it in the native application for you to edit. The system will constantly patrol that file and synchronize any changes back to the cloud and back to Samepage.

When the editing is done clicking Save and Close will trigger our system to remove the file from your machine and upload it back to Samepage and to the cloud. The system will create a brand new version of that file and finish synchronizing the last changes. You will see a notification message on your machine that the file was successfully uploaded.

This process takes the stress and worry out of working with files since we take care of all of the versioning and synchronization for you automatically.
